New book on history of East End boxing

I’ve a good mind to send a copy of this to our current team. Let them know what East End grit and determination is all about!!
If there are any WHO’ers out there that have an interest in boxing as well as the history of East London, then you may like to read a book that I have written that is being published and released for sale this Saturday 15th February.
It is called “EASTbEND – BORN and BLED” and tells the story of Boxing from its earliest bare-knuckled days in the docks, pubs and streets around East London 300 years ago until recent times. It is interwoven with the development of the area and is packed with great facts, stories and images of all aspects of the sport and its links with the social history of the East End.
It has been a huge project for me and has taken three years to put together and includes interviews with some East End boxers. Harry Redknapp has kindly supplied a foreword for the book as there is a small section on the connection with the sport and West Ham football club.
Anyway, if you are interested, it can be ordered or purchased either direct from the publishers – Amberley Books or from most retailers including Amazon, Waterstones, W.H.Smiths and Foyles. It should also be in most of the indie book shops in the East London area and the City.
I am booked in to do a book signing at Waterstones in Romford on Saturday 22nd at 1.00 pm.

Haller- Yes there is a small section on Mark in the book. Lots of info on lads that came out of West Ham and Repton boxing clubs.

If any of you guys out there are not going to the Southampton match on Saturday and fancy a walk down East End's memory lanes, taking in their boxing history at the same time this may be for you.
There is a Book Launch/presentation taking place at 2.00pm this Saturday at the Whitechapel Idea Store.
It is a FREE 'Open Event'. I'll provide some light refreshment. Should be a few old ex boxers and some others from the boxing community there.
Numbers may be restricted so best to get a free ticket through their website:

Should be a very pleasant two hours.
The Whitechapel Idea store is about 50 yards to the right of the Blind Beggar pub.

Great weekend for boxing that’s for sure. Disappointed in Reid but I think the low blow finished him off really.

Yes, I searched quite hard for a decent image of the Mile End Arena. Managed to find just two and neither of them were good quality I'm afraid.
Good night of boxing at York Hall yesterday. Shame about the Lucien Reid result. But Dennis McCann ex Repton lad looked very good.

My copy of the book has just arrived. Worth the money for the photographs alone. Never seen the one of the Mile End Arena before. Can’t wait to read it.

Hope it doesn't get overshadowed too much by the Wilder/Fury fight but there should be a real humdinger at the York Hall this Saturday when it hosts British/commonwealth super-bantamweight re-match fight between West Ham's Lucian Reid and Brad Foster.
Unsplitable before Christmas they were.

Yes, very sad about Sammy but given his life, he got to good age. Went the full 15.
As you may know Sammy spent his later years living in Wanstead. So too does another boxer, Eddie Quill. The Quill family feature a bit in the book as well.
Sadly, nothing about the TKO gym. The amount of information I gathered doing the research was huge and there was still a lot more out there.
Could easily write a second similar length book but having spent 3 years on this one I think the Mrs would walk out the door if a started another one!! She's not into boxing history.

I’ll bring me old man along. He’s nearly 90, still goes up the LEBA on first of each month. He’s gutted about Sammy. We’re all originally out of Stepney/Bethnal green, so even me mum remembers Sammy, as he was one of their own. (The whole east end followed him. Like so many other fighters over the years)
Also, wondered if you went up me cousins gym (TKO) and whether it gets a mention somewhere along the line.
Anyway, good luck and I’ll get the old man along. (He’s not on the ropes just yet!)

This is awesome kips and good on you!
Sounds a bit weird but in my childhood I lived opposite St Mary's Church and would spend an great deal of time at the gravestone if Tom Cribb in Woolwich. Was very much my "place to go" when I felt a bit shit.
Would love to find out more about the characters and boxing pioneers of that time and will definitely be purchasing.

Yes Ralph is in the book. He fought Napoles just as Napoles was reaching the very peak of his powers.

I met Sammy a couple of times. Lovely, quietly spoken and a very gentle man. I spend a good couple of hours with him talking about boxing in the 50's and early 60's
Bright as a button he was.

I know how hard it is to get a publisher to take on that dream of yours.
Hope you have lots of success with it.
A bit of nostalgia years ago I was at East Ham Tech college with a Keith Charles whose brother was Ralph Charles.
It was at the same time when he fought Jose Napoles for the world title.
I met Ralph on numerous occasions he was completely unaffected and a real nice bloke.
